Journals On-line

The World Wide Web provides several scientific journals which are available on-line. Usually, the version of the journal which you see electronically will not be the full printed edition. It may contain selected articles from the current or past issues, an index of articles or even a more in-depth study of a particular topic.

There are several advantages to consulting an on-line journal however. The pages may give you details about forth coming articles which will appear in the next issue as well as electronic images of recently printed pictures. One particularly useful feature of some electronic journals is that they will provide a table of contents and abstracts for papers which will appear in the next issue. Electronic versions of journals may appear some time before the printed journal is available. The publication of tables of contents and sometimes abstracts of a journal electronically is an increasingly common trend. This is particularly useful if you are a scientist in a fast moving field of research (some people would argue that this true of all areas of the Biological Sciences). If you are a researcher, you can use the electronic journals on the Internet to be right up to date with current research, even before it is published in paper form!

There is no doubt that electronic publishing will be more common in the future. Many publishers are watching this field closely and there is a slow increase in the number of journals with a presence on the World Wide Web.
