NCBI

NCBI stands for National Center for Biotechnology Information in case you didn't know. NCBI build, maintain and distribute a database called GenBank. If you work in the field of biological databases you will have heard of it. GenBank is a collection of nucleic acid sequences and collects all the known DNA sequences from scientists world-wide. It is one of the most important sequence databases today. The GenBank database is big (I know from experience) and it is growing all the time. You can use the NCBI page to search their database as well as some others. If you have just sequenced some DNA, why not use the World Wide Web to submit your sequence to GenBank. Alternatively get a copy of a printed form to send through the post to GenBank.

Remember that all nucleic sequences should be submitted to GenBank so that other people know about it. If you have published a nucleic acid sequence in a journal, it may already be in the GenBank database. Many of the well known journals automatically send sequences to GenBank. More details about this are on the NCBI pages.

There are various other links on this page which give you information about NCBI, announcements and general what's going on information. You can also get information about the staff at NCBI, their research projects and how to get in touch with them.
