Meningitis and other Central Nervous System infections

Amoebic meningitis

  • Cysts of the amoeba Naeglaria fowleri live in the sediments of lakes. The amoebae if inhaled can burrow through the cribiform plate to cause a fatal meningitis which is, fortunately, rare. It is this organism that infects the hot water springs that feed the Roman baths at Bath, Somerset.
