Supplementary Information

Urinary tract infections during pregnancy may have catastrophic effects on the foetus. Because urinary tract infections are frequently asymptomatic in pregnancy, and because pregnancy is a predisposing factor for urinary tract infections, pregnant women are regularly screened for laboratory evidence of urinary tract infections. There is a much higher incidence of complications including renal scarring following UTI's, symptomatic and non-symptomatic, in pregnancy. It is therefore important to screen and treat all UTI's in pregnancy.
